Taking Charge in Franchising and Operations

With a background in franchising, Sarah Stoten has always been drawn to finding new ways to unlock efficiencies and drive progress. Her passion for continuous improvement stems from an innate curiosity and the need for new challenges. “I enjoy understanding where the continuous improvements are and how to unlock these,” she says. This mindset has been a driving force in her career, leading her to a leadership role at Filta UK.

Thriving in a Male-Dominated Industry

Operating in a primarily male-dominated environment, whether among franchisees, engineers, or technical support teams, has presented its challenges. Sarah has had to develop the skills to ensure her voice is heard, especially when faced with assumptions about her technical expertise.

“I developed my technical skills very early so I could hold my own,” Sarah explains. “I also built strong relationships with team members who could support my weaker areas of knowledge, ensuring that the best decisions were always made.” Her strategic approach to learning and collaboration has been key to her success in the field.

From DLO to Franchise Success

One of Sarah’s proudest achievements has been leading Filta UK’s transformation from a Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) to a successful franchise business. This shift required vision, resilience, and a deep understanding of operational efficiencies. Her ability to navigate this complex transition showcases her leadership and strategic thinking.

Changing the Landscape for Women

Sarah is committed to encouraging more women to develop their technical skills and step into operational management roles. “I hope I’ve helped build confidence in other women to develop their skills and take on leadership positions in operations,” she says. By leading by example, she continues to pave the way for others in the industry.

Advice for Aspiring Female Leaders

Sarah’s advice to women looking to take on leadership positions is clear: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be curious in male-dominated arenas. Be ambitious about developing your knowledge but do it with integrity.” She emphasises the importance of confidence and persistence in overcoming industry barriers.

After experiencing the common interruptions in the boardroom, by often male counterparts. Sarah shares an approach she likes to use, “respond with calmness and say…, ‘Did the end of my sentence, interrupt the beginning of yours?’

A Final Thought

Sarah’s career has been built on self-belief, determination, and integrity, qualities she believes are essential for women looking to excel in male-dominated industries. “Have self-belief, determination, and integrity in equal measures,” she advises. With her leadership and vision, she continues to inspire the next generation of women in operations and franchising.

Success is about making a meaningful impact and maintaining independence. “Understanding what drives you and why these motivations matter, is crucial,” she reflects.

“Checking in with these core principles daily helps guide important career decisions.”
